April 2021

I love sunflowers. BalsamRoot Flowers are very similar. So when that flower season hits in April and May, we search the best unknown fields and meadows to find them. There are places in the Columbia River Gorge where people come to famously search these flower shows out. These trails become so crowded that you now have to have tickets on the weekends to go do these hikes. I hate that! When I hike I want to be alone and do not want to feel like cattle shopping at the mall. So I search high and low every Spring and research long lost trails that have balsamroots. This was a new trail for us out in central Oregon. It was a long drive to get there, with initially no flowers in sight. But once we made it far enough, we found BalsamRoot as far as the eyes could see. I felt like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. They literally went on and on for acres and acres! I had never seen anything like it. These made the infamous Dog Mountain look like nothing!! Mount Hood was clearly visible to our West that day before the clouds rolled in and it was spectacular. Nova even took the time to smell and appreciate the flowers too! Of course she wore yellow to honor the Balsamroot and her flower collar!
