This was my bonus birthday hike. I had taken off for the weekend to go out to the Oregon coast with Nova. We did 2 days of hiking in cold and stormy weather. We had the beach and trails all to ourselves! Nova LOVED playing ball on that open expanse of beach and put up with all the rain and mud on those coastal trails. It was such foreign hiking for me though. I had grown so accustomed to trees and mountains that this felt like hiking on another planet. I couldn't decide if I loved it or hated it, but I enjoyed the loneliness of that cold and stormy beach. It was a great time for deep contemplation! We were utterly soaked and truly muddy by the end however that we didn’t even care that we had to change our clothing along the side of busy Hwy 101 that day, although I am sure that shocked a few of the drivers. It was a cold night at base camp (aka my truck that we slept in). March is not the warmest month to sleep in your truck along the Oregon coast, but it was the first time I really put our new thermos to a test. It truly did keep my hot cocoa “burn your tongue warm” for 26 hours and helped warm me up! I was thoroughly impressed. Might have been the best birthday in 47 years!!
After the first day of beach hiking, we found a trail through coastal forests and came across this tree. It felt like a portal to another world and shortly after passing through it, we found this mighty view. Watch that first step! Even NovaLeigh was impressed with the crashing waves below us and the seagulls flying around us.
